What happened to eBay?

An interesting blog post that ponders the weakness of auctioneer giant eBay since its stock has faded into obscurity in recent years. The author contends that one of the reasons the company is declining is the "eBay's format problems" is weighing on the security, pulling down the "rest of what are pretty solid businesses that eBay owns, chiefly online payments service PayPal and internet calling company Skype." An interesting article about how online security can affect a companies lack of sales.

I thought this little clip on the Google Search Appliance (GSA) was pretty cool. It is a yellow box that provides universal search for businesses of all sizes. This handy yellow box pulls together documents, images, and other files from web servers, intranets, business applications, and more, making all of this accessible from one search box!

Atlantis Found in Google Earth?

Since the launch of the new Google Earth, many people have been using the ocean feature that allows the user to see the ocean floor. Many people have discovered off the coast of Africa an area that looks like the lost city of Atlantis. See the picture below. However, Google says that these are actually the tracks that ships took when trying to determine the depth of the ocean. In most areas, the ocean is 2.5 miles deep. This means the sonar has to go all of the way down and up back to the ship. By the time it gets back up, the ship has moved and thus leaves behind these “ship tracks”.

Quick Look: FBI Most Wanted iPhone Application

In the beginning of my posting I wasn't sure if I should have posted about the iFlush iPhone application in which you pretend to flush things you "love to hate" down the toilet or this article - which is an application informing you of the FBIs Most Wanted. I don't know which application is more ridiculous! As I continue to read this blog about iPhones it truly impresses me every week to learn about this small, hand-held device that can obtain so much information and all to the individual discretion of the iPhone owner. I'm not particularly sure why having the FBI Most Wanted Application is necessary or even desired but I thought it was worth sharing incase any of you are worried that person sitting next to you is on this list. Why social networking sites are good for the Kids

A professor of synaptic pharmacology at Lincoln College, Oxford and the director of the Royal Institution, is interviewed as to why she loathes sites such as Facebook, Flickr, Bebo, etc. Examples she includes are the poor grammar, lack of attention span, sensationalism, inability to empathize; as well as a shaky sense of identity. The article then shifts focus to then talk about the positive aspects of social networking; and how by using such sources users are part of the transition from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0

BitTorrent Vs. OneSwarm

BitTorrent is not secure in regards to transfering information P2P. Other people can esailey see your informatino. A new application, OneSwarm, has been created to help with this problem. With OneSwarm users information is skewed due to the applications function of forwarding data past multiple agents. OneSwarm improves confidentiality in peer-to-peer networks by sending information from point A to point B and then back again. Unlike BitTorrent One Swarm is backwards comapatible. If you want to learn more information about upgrading your file sharring applications to a more secure application, click the title of this blog.

Avoid Online Conflict

I believe this article addresses something that all of us have dealt with in the past, or will deal with in the future: online conflict. Whether you’re posting a note on Facebook or an opinionated post on your blog, there’s a possibility that you’ll have to deal with negative feedback or comments. When addressing these comments keep three things in mind:

1) Don’t take it personally
2) Process before responding
3) Find something to agree with

These rules can help you prevent bashing and public arguments, which is always a good thing. You never know who’s going to eventually read them and trace them back to you. It’s just another reminder of online etiquettes.

50 Wonderful, Inspiring Photoblogs

http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/02/14/50-wonderful-inspiring-photoblogs/

This post introduces photoblogs, which is where people post up their pictures instead of writing. It has been becoming more popular over the last few years. The link has 50 examples of these photoblogs that they have chosen for people to enjoy. I think once I start traveling, I might start my own photoblog to display the pictures I take of different places.

Google steps up to fix calender & contact sync bugs

http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2009/02/google-adds-cal.html

Google has stepped in and designed a more efficient calender & contact sync program for almost every cell phone, mainly the iPhone. Apple's current program was lacking and was causing a lot of issues with current users. Apparently ll the information is stored on a server on Google's end. Google believes its interface is much more user-friendly than the Apple version and is dedicated to becoming more effective than the current application. Update your phones people!

AT&T Offering $99 Refurb iPhones Again

It is my understanding that as world citizens we face trials with the environment because of all the trash we relentlessly and carelessly dispose. I would like to share this post from the blog I am following because although you may not be getting the newest of the new - people can still have something that works just as well as something new. Refurbished iPhones are now available through AT&T and if you ask me - I think this is a great way to get costumers that are not only environmentally conscious but those who may not be able to afford the iPhone for it's original full price.

Casinos Warn iPhone Card-Counting APP is Ilegal

The newest rage on the iPhone for gamblers is a game call HI Lo. This application allows users to count cards. The designer of the program enabled it to be played in stealth mode, or rather with the iPhone's touch screen turned off. If the user of the program knows where the buttons are the program can still run in stealth mode. Casinos are warning people who own the application (with intend of use), or use the application it is illegal.

Ok, I was forced to find a new blog because of the ones that I was following have not had any activity in over a week. So I have chosen to follow "The Official Google Blog." I know it sound cheesy but I only chose it because I found this one particular comment so interesting...

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/02/my-maps-your-love-stories.html

This comment was posted by someone who wanted to create a way for people to express their love through maps. He, along with a few others, created "My Map," where people can mark all of the important, romantic places in their life. People can even upload photos and videos to illustrate their love story. It's pretty cool!

Cloud Contacts: Good idea, but I wouldn't pay for it

CloudContacts seems to be a great technical asset to business people who accumulate numerous business cards from various meetings. Essentially CloudContacts is a service that will import the information on the card, as well as any notes you’ve taken down, into a database system. This database makes it easier do you to keep track of all your business associates and provides links to their own social network profiles and company websites. However this service is not free. I’ve yet to have an actual job where I collect other people’s business cards, but if I did, I think I’d stick with making my own database via MS Access or another free online service. I’m a bit stingy with money and don’t really want to pay people to type data into a computer when I’m capable of doing it myself.

GrouperEye Launches Marketplace for Internships

GrouperEye is a new site that has launched as a marketplace for companies to find students to help them out with particular projects. The idea is to find students that are passionate about what they do, and will be able to benefit from this type of “internship.” The projects they work on are listed on GrouperEye as real time cases, which are formatted as competitions, giving the companies fresh perspectives and budget-conscious results. Below is an excerpt of an interview I had with Ted Williams, the President and Founder of GrouperEye.

Google-brand social mapping

"Latitude" was just launched by Google as its new version of social mapping. It is an application that allows you to see your friends exact location on a Google map. They are able to see exactly where you are as well. If you do not want them to be able to loacte you, you can simply X them out or adjust your privacy settings. All it takes is typing your mobile phone number into the box on the site www.google.com/latitude and downloading the application from the link that is sent to your phone. Once you invite your friends to do the same, you will be able to see eachother. This application seems pretty interesting and when I get internet access on my phone, the first thing I will do is start using Google Latitude.

Twitter to Start Charging for Business Accounts

Everyone seems to be on Myspace and Facebook, but lately Twitter has been making more and more of an appearance in articles on the social marketing forums online as well as general news. This posting shows however, what the primary goal of any internet service appears to be – to make money. Twitter has been searching for ways to make money off their users, not just provide a service for them, and have come to the decision that by charging business account holders, that they will be able to generate some revenue to keep going. It also brings up an important question though, when talking about how they will figure out costs for commercial accounts. Where do you draw the line – yes you can have an official commercial account, but what about those who just “trickle in bits of self promotion here and there, ” and do you only charge the big guys. It’s a question that has been asked in many scenarios, for example with music downloading – should you only pay to download the small and lesser known artists, and not the big artists that have more money, or should you be charged for each of them? It may be more beneficial for Twitter to take a page from Facebook and offer advertising space for ‘pay per click’ or ‘pay per view’ as Facebook does, and make a more steady income that way. It would also keep the accounts free, as one of the drawbacks we discussed last week about PB Wiki is that you have to pay for more services, unlike google docs where you get an account with everything you need for free.

iTunes might get streaming with acceptable prices for same

Much like what we can find on Netflix, Apple is now working diligently to provide the ability to stream movies from Itunes, after they are purchased (rather than having to wait to download it to view it. This proposal was made due to the increase of movie streaming (for people who like to purchase/locate their favorite movies and watch them instantaneously) rather than waiting an hour or two to watch them. Issues to be worked out would contain designed a super compressor for the newer cinematic films, due to the increase of HD and Blu Ray technology, in order to decrease the amount of time needed for downloads and buffering. If this proves to be succesful we can look for this function in the release of Apple's Itunes 8.

The archives provide for a reading to catch up on past communications. This is very valuable when finding a new site to see what their message or edict is.

Hu Needs TV When You Have Hulu?

Everyone knows about YouTube, but now there may be something else to compete – Hulu. At first glance, Hulu is pretty cool – you can watch episodes of some of the most popular TV series, the Office, SNL , House, 24 etc all at one place. However they may have tried too hard with movies – one of the first movies I glanced at is not recent nor sounds familiar “The Robot Holocaust.”The Social Marketing blog mentions how this should be a big hit with the younger generation which is possible, but then with new options like DVR and TiVo, Hulu may be overshadowed. According to the blog, “We have only seen the beginning of this powerful new online medium.”

See the blog... Welcome to Huluwood

404 Error Pages, One More Time

http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/01/29/404-error-pages-one-more-time/

This post is about the error pages that people encounter when the page they are looking for does not exist. It explains how these pages are overlooked and how they can keep visitors on the site if done correctly. I liked looking at the examples they gave of effective and funny 404 pages. I think looking at the different examples shows how an effective 404 page would be beneficial in keeping visitors browsing through the website to find the information they are looking for instead of leaving the website completely.

From iTouch to iPhone

Image from hiphopdx.com

I have an iPhone so personally this blog intrigued me because it described about how I could use an ITouch to perform the functions of a phone. The iTouch is at least a hundred dollars cheaper then the iPhone. The idea behind the change makes sense. If you get Wi-Fi with your ITouch why not use VOIP like jajah. This way you pick up on free phone plan without having to pay the high cost involved with having an iPhone. The biggest community that would benefit from this development would be college students all around the world who don't have money to waste on phone bills, yet have unlimited free Wi-Fi service (via their school).

Governments taking stand in Internet Communities

17 Social Networks Sign European Pact to Curb Cyber-Bullies
A new pact for discouraging cyber-bullying and predatory behavior on social networks has been signed by seventeen social networking sites that have a presence in Europe, including MySpace, Bebo, Dailymotion, YouTube, and Habbo Hotel, reports Reuters. The European Commission is hoping such widespread adoption of the pact will make the Internet a safer place for children. The announcement comes on the heels of MySpace revealing its successful blocking of 90,000 registered sex offenders, some of which were later found on Facebook. And Facebook appears to be missing from this new EU pact as well, though both MySpace and Facebook have their own initiatives with state and federal authorities in the United States for the protection of their users.

Spy On Your Employees With Google Latitude

http://www.bmighty.com/blog/main/archives/2009/02/spy_on_your_emp.html

Google recently unveiled a new program for use that lets others know where you really are. The program is called Latitude a program that can be compared to this is Facebook. Very simple to sign up for too, all you need is a phone number. Most of the users that are on it use it to see lets say if their husband is really stuck in traffic or not. Most argue if this is really needed? Is it to big of a spy tool? The blog focuses on the argument of whether its needed or not and all the great features with latitude. Its very simple too because its basically a map with your face in whatever city your in, a fun feature that you can also use is updating your status for example "Partying in DC" or "Surfin the west coast shores." Quotes like these give a person a perspective that your in DC and California. Great blog on a new feature available to all users with a mobile phone.
http://timesonline.typepad.com/technology/2009/02/google-sorry-fo.html

Here is a great story on how Google broke the Internet. Its somewhat humorous in hindsight but it does bring up the question - if someone took away Google, how much of an impact would that have on your surfing habits? No more Google Earth? No more Image search or Street view?

How much of a google junkie are you? What would you do without your fix?

How To Turn a Netbook Into a Net Jukebox

I thought this article was interesting because it shows someone how to turn a Netbook (a small, light, inexpensive useless computer) into an ultimate music library. It provides resources on how to obtain pretty much any song, genre, or artist that you desire. In doing so, some programs listed can also provide a person similar-like artists and/or genres based on what is played or already stored in your music directory on your Netbook (ie...Pandora).

4th Grader Designed iPhone Application

I'm not sure what to think! This blog entry was somewhat mind blowing as it discusses an Application that was picked up by the App Store called "Doodle Kids". Lim Ding Wen is a 9 year old boy who has to be some kind of genius to have created such a program and nonetheless catch the eye of Apple. I am definitely considering getting this application, not because it only looks good but mostly because it is created by a child that probably shouldn't even care what an iPhone or iPhone App is! Incredible! You Are NOT Smarter Than This 4th Grader

"Just Another iPhone Blog"

I have decided to follow a blog "Just Another iPhone Blog" because as a new owner of an iPhone I am intrigued by the many capabilities I have yet to understand about this phone, but more so the iPhone culture that is developing around this piece of technology. A prime example of this culture is the first blog entry I would like to share:
Only $22 for an iPhone - iPhone Earing That Is …

Posted using ShareThis
It's a simple look at how technology can translate into a piece ornament for the body. I found the fact that someone was making these earrings a huge highlight to the importance this iPhone has to some people. It's when you see accessorizing of an object (and not the actual object) you know that something (that being the iPhone) is much bigger than itself. I know this blog entry isn't as technology orientated as the others, but I thought it was definitely worth sharing!

I think that the class might find this Blog comment interesting because it discusses the actual format of the NMAI online museum. While I do not understand a lot of his terms, I know that he is criticizing some of the technicalities of the website. He wants the site to be more high-tech, which I think is a valid request for something as detailed as an entire online museum.

There was no link to the one specific comment so I have posted the actual comment and the link to the Blog as a whole...

How Companies Can Use Social Media

_______________________________________________________

While teenagers and college students strive to remain connected to their friends 24/7 through the internet via blogging, micro blogging and social networking, companies are moving forward and trying to stay connected to consumers. This blog entry lists 10 companies/brands who have embraced the internet and various tools in order to market and/or address consumer problems. Burger King with their “Sacrifice ten friends” Facebook application, Starbuck’s consumer feedback site “My Starbucks Idea,” and CEO blogs and twitters from Comcast, Zappos and IBM. These brands were able to successfully take advantage of WEB 2.0 tools and not only help themselves, but were able to do it in an interesting or humorous way.

Mobile Restaurant Ordering (Finally) Hits The App Store

In the last week or so, Apple has release applications for the iPhone, which include online menus for hundreds of restaurants. The newest feature found to with these online menus is that users may now order entrees, appetizers, and drinks without even physically encountering a waiter (virtually eliminating a lot of the hustle and bustle of the food industry).

Grand Text Auto

I decided to follow Grand Text Auto for the rest of the semester. Because I'm intrigued by randomness, and the collaging of arbitrary text and images, I was immediately struck by a posting about new commissions from Turbulence, which "commissions artists exploring the Internet, and who both use existing applications and technologies and develop new ones to create innovative work."

While the book project about Networked Art was interesting, especially for its collaboration and openness, Jody Zellen's Without a Trace really drew me in. Turbulence describes her project as, "
Each day for a year, a comic image, a trace drawing, and three words from the original comic strip will be randomly selected from an archive. These will be juxtaposed with live text and image feeds from the New York Times online." See more in About the Project.

Sex offenders in social sites: Consider the facts

This blog is talking about the incidents involving sex offenders on Facebook and Myspace. It says that not children are equally at risk. It gives circumstances in which some kids are more at risk than others and reasons for why some kids are less likely to be at risk. It also mentions that in most cases, the victims are not strangers to their sexual offenders. The stories you hear are pretty scary and very sad. It is good to have a blog like this to know how you might be able to help prevent a situation like this from happening to someone you know.

The National Museum of the American Indians has just their collection online!

I have actually found 2 blogs that about the same thing that I will be following. They both involve the National Museum of the American Indians (NMAI) putting their entire collections online. NMAI is striving to become a part of the popular internet era through myspace, twitter, putting artifacts along with their descriptions online, and now this blog.

There was recently an article about NMAI putting themselves on the web in the Washington Post this past week. There is a blog attached to this article is which I thought was interesting because they talk about what a great accomplishment it is that NMAI is finally becoming a part of today's Social Networking. Here is the link to the Washington Post comment page...

Most people have heard of monster.com, or other various job sites, but most people seriously looking for a job don't do it on facebook or myspace. Apparently, they are missing out.
Around the DC area, a phrase you’ll hear often is “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” This posting reflects how even that has be "internetized,’ as now you can go online and fine out who’s who at the company you’re interested in, and get some background information on them so that you may be able to get yourself a foot in the door.

At the same time, friending someone on Facebook or Myspace isn’t neccessarily going to get you a job, unless you spend a lot of time trying to go to the same events etc, which is possibly a waste of time, as it doesn’t guarantee you a job, and definitely creepy. Still, social networking in general is beneficial in that people you have reconnected with may be able to provide an ‘in’ to a company etc.

Unsecure Webpages

I though this was a very interesting point that all web page designers should think about when making their web pages. If a spider search engine can locate your website, there is no doubt that other people can locate it, and hack into it. I now feel I need to look into how to secure my website so all the information and data is safe from outsiders.

Facebook as a Marketing Tool

I think Facebook is one of the major aspects of our generation’s Internet experience. Most people have a Facebook profile and a large percentage of these people are active or overly active on the site. Since the social network is so large, vast and diverse, it’s no surprise that companies look to it as a potential marketing tool. Facebook has apparently given rights to large companies to poll Facebook users on "various details of their social life. From my understanding, it means that companies can now target users [certain age groups, sexual orientation, location, education] and place a poll in their feed.

Although I don’t like the idea of companies obtaining information about me personally, I do think, that from a business perspective, this is a great marketing idea.

Apple Collaborating with Adobe to Create a Better Flash for the iPhone

Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen has told the press that they are in fact working with the individuals at Apple to create a suitable flash program for the iPhone. Complaints have been made that the current flash player built in to the device is too heavy on the CPU and thus drains its battery life entirely too fast; and also that the supposed solution "Flash-lite" is just plain horrible. The concept Flash software will allow users to view their favorite television shows, videos, and movies on their iPhones alot more smoothly, preserving much more of their battery life. This all came to light as a result of hearing about Google's new mobile phone operating system, Android, making its way mainstream and posing a significant threat to Apples mobile OS. Android has been rumored to have more flexibility and more functionality than the Apple OS for iPhone, but after the iPhone fixes its flash problem, only time will tell.
