Since the launch of the new Google Earth, many people have been using the ocean feature that allows the user to see the ocean floor. Many people have discovered off the coast of Africa an area that looks like the lost city of Atlantis. See the picture below. However, Google says that these are actually the tracks that ships took when trying to determine the depth of the ocean. In most areas, the ocean is 2.5 miles deep. This means the sonar has to go all of the way down and up back to the ship. By the time it gets back up, the ship has moved and thus leaves behind these “ship tracks”.
